GMAT® Study Tips: 15 Tips That Actually Work

If you've been searching for GMAT® study tips, you've probably found plenty of lists that tell you to "study consistently" and "know the format." Those aren't wrong, but they don't help much when you sit down to study and you're not sure what to do with the time in front of you.

Each tip below is something we've seen move scores in our work with students over the years. They're specific, actionable, and organized so you can find the ones that apply to where you are right now.

General Study Habits

1. Start every session with the three takeaways method

Before you open a book or start a new problem set, sit down with a blank piece of paper. Try to write down three major things you learned in your last study session. Not things you read. Things you can explain out loud.

If you can't get to three, that's a signal your last session didn't stick, and it's worth understanding why before you pile more content on top of a shaky foundation. Maybe you were passively reading instead of actively solving, or maybe you were tired and the material didn't register. Either way, the three takeaways method catches that gap before it compounds across weeks of study.

This method works because it forces retrieval. Re-reading notes feels productive but doesn't build memory. Pulling information out of your head, even when it's hard, is what makes it stick for test day.

2. Keep a redo list, not an error log spreadsheet

A redo list is exactly what it sounds like: a list of problems you got wrong, so you can redo them later. Not a spreadsheet with columns for "topic," "difficulty," "time spent," and "root cause category." Those spreadsheets look impressive but they probably don't help you get better.

The redo list works because re-solving a problem you missed is where the learning happens. The act of categorizing it in a spreadsheet isn't the same as solving it again. When you start each study session, spend your first 15 to 20 minutes working through redo list problems. If you get one right twice in a row, take it off the list.

3. Spend 20 to 30 percent of every session reviewing

Most students spend nearly all their study time doing new problems and almost none of it reviewing. That ratio tends to produce students who work hard but don't improve, because they're constantly moving forward without fixing the gaps behind them.

A better ratio: for every 10 problems you do, spend 20 to 30 percent of that time going back over the ones you missed. Not just checking the answer. Re-solving from scratch. Reading the explanation. Identifying the specific step where you went wrong. And then adding that problem to your redo list.

If you're studying 15 hours a week, that means roughly 3 to 4.5 hours of review built into your sessions, not bolted on at the end.

4. Use interleaved practice, not blocked practice

Blocked practice means doing 20 rate problems in a row, then 20 exponent problems, then 20 number properties problems. It feels efficient because you get into a rhythm. But research on learning suggests it doesn't transfer well to test day, when problems show up in random order.

Interleaved practice means mixing topics within a single set. Rate, then number properties, then exponents, then back to rate. It feels harder. You'll make more mistakes in the moment. But that difficulty is the point: your brain has to keep retrieving the right framework for each problem type, which builds stronger recall than blocked practice does.

Most official resources let you build mixed sets. Use that feature.

Quant Tips

5. Write down every step on your scratch pad

The GMAT® doesn't give you a calculator on the Quant section. That's not a handicap, it's a design choice. The test is checking whether you can reason through problems without relying on computation shortcuts.

The biggest mistake we see on Quant is trying to do math in your head. Mental math on the GMAT® tends to produce two outcomes: you make an arithmetic error and pick a trap answer, or you burn extra time double-checking yourself because you're not sure you did it right.

WRITE every step. Every variable, every calculation, every elimination. Your scratch pad is not a place for final answers. It's a place for the full trail of reasoning that gets you there. If you can't look back at your scratch work and trace how you got from the problem to the answer, you've done too much in your head.

6. Learn to recognize problem types, not memorize solutions

When you miss a problem, the instinct is to memorize the solution so you don't miss it again. That works for that specific problem, but it doesn't help when the same concept shows up in a different wrapper on test day.

Instead, train yourself to name the problem type. Is this a rate problem? A ratio translation? A divisibility question dressed up as a word problem? Once you can name the type, you can pull the right framework. The framework is what gets you to the answer, not the memorized solution.

This is why we recommend testing numbers as a systematic method rather than memorizing number theory rules. The system can work across more problems than any list of rules could cover.

7. Practice with a count-up timer, not a countdown timer

Most students practice with a countdown timer because that's what the real exam uses. But a countdown timer creates pressure, and pressure is the enemy of learning new techniques.

When you're building a skill, use a count-up timer instead. Start it when you begin a problem and stop it when you finish. You'll see how long each problem takes without the anxiety of watching time run out. Once your technique is solid and your accuracy is where you want it, switch back to a countdown timer for the last few weeks of prep.

Verbal Tips

8. For Reading Comprehension, map the passage before reading questions

Don't try to memorize details on your first read. You probably won't remember them, and the questions rarely ask for the kind of detail you'd memorize anyway.

Instead, build a mental map. After each paragraph, pause for two seconds and note the main point. Not the details. The function. Is this paragraph providing evidence? Setting up a contrast? Introducing a counterargument?

When you get to the questions, your map tells you where to look. Most wrong answers on RC aren't wrong because they're false. They're wrong because they're in the wrong part of the passage, or they describe something the passage doesn't actually say. A good map catches both.

9. For Critical Reasoning, find the gap before reading answer choices

The biggest mistake on CR questions is reading the argument, then diving into the answer choices to see which one "sounds right." By the time you're scanning answers, you've already lost the structural thread.

Instead, after reading the argument, pause. Identify the conclusion. Identify the evidence. Then ask yourself: what's the gap between the evidence and the conclusion? What assumption is the author making that they didn't state?

Once you can name the gap, the right answer usually jumps out. The wrong answers are wrong because they don't bridge that specific gap. We have a complete CR strategy guide that walks through this process for every question type.

10. Don't second-guess your framework-based answers

A pattern we see with strong verbal students: they identify the right answer using a solid framework, then talk themselves out of it because the question "feels like it's trying to trick them."

If you have a framework and it points to answer B, stick with B unless you find a concrete reason it's wrong. The GMAT® tends to reward STRUCTURE over intuition. Your framework is more reliable than your gut feeling under time pressure.

Data Insights Tips

11. Treat Data Sufficiency as a logic puzzle, not a math problem

Data Sufficiency questions don't ask you to calculate an answer. They ask you to determine whether you could calculate an answer with the given information. That's a different skill.

The most common DS mistake is doing too much math. You start solving the equation, you get a number, and then you check whether that number answers the question. But often you don't need the number at all. You just need to know whether the information is sufficient to get there.

Train yourself to stop as soon as you know sufficiency. If Statement (1) gives you a single equation with a single variable, you don't need to solve it. It's sufficient. Move on.

12. For graphs and tables, read the axes before the data

Graphics Interpretation and Table Analysis questions reward careful reading of the structure before you dive into the numbers. Read the title, the axis labels, the units, and any footnotes. Then look at the data.

Students who skip this step tend to make errors not because they can't read a graph, but because they misread what the graph is showing. A chart labeled "percentage change" is different from one labeled "percentage of total." The axes tell you what story the data is telling. Read them first.

Test Day and Mindset

13. Know when to let go of a question

The single most important test day skill is knowing when to give up on a question. Every question on the GMAT® is worth the same number of points. Spending 4 minutes on a hard question means you have 4 fewer minutes for the remaining questions, and the adaptive algorithm can penalize you more for a string of misses at the end than for one miss in the middle.

A good benchmark: if you've spent 90 seconds on a Quant problem and you don't have a clear path to the answer, make your best guess and move on. If you've spent 60 seconds on a Verbal problem and you're down to two answer choices but can't decide, pick one and move on.

14. Track your sleep, diet, and exercise during prep

This sounds like it belongs in a health blog, not a GMAT® post. But what we've seen in our work with students is consistent: students who sleep adequately, eat regularly, and exercise even moderately tend to perform better on practice tests than students who don't.

You don't need to optimize your life. Just track these three things for a few weeks. What gets measured tends to improve. If you notice your practice test scores dip after a week of 5-hour nights, that's useful data. If you see your accuracy improve when you exercise in the morning, that's useful too.

The week before your exam, prioritize sleep above everything else. Cramming the night before tends to hurt more than it helps, because fatigue has a bigger impact on performance than the few extra facts you might retain.

15. Take practice tests under real conditions

Practice tests are only useful if they simulate the real exam. That means same time of day as your scheduled test, same section order you plan to use, the official 10-minute break structure, no phone, no music, no pauses. If you're taking the online exam, use a physical whiteboard.

If you take practice tests on the couch with the TV muted, your practice scores will probably be higher than your real score. The test center environment adds pressure that casual practice doesn't replicate.

Most students need 15 to 20 hours per week to make meaningful progress over a 3-month timeline. If you have more time before your test date, you can spread those hours across more weeks and study fewer hours per week. The total number of study hours matters more than the weekly distribution.

What is the most common GMAT® study mistake?

Not spending enough time reviewing mistakes. Most students do new problems constantly but never go back to fix the ones they missed. A 20 to 30 percent review ratio built into every session tends to produce faster improvement than doing more new problems.

Should I study every day?

Daily study can help maintain momentum, but you don't need to do a full session every day. Short sessions of 30 to 60 minutes on weekdays and longer sessions on weekends can work well. The key is consistency: studying 2 hours every day tends to be more effective than studying 10 hours one day and nothing the other six.

How do I know if my GMAT® study plan is working?

Take a practice test every 2 to 3 weeks. If your scores are trending up, your plan is working. If your scores are flat after 4 to 6 weeks of consistent study, something in your process probably needs to change. Usually it's the review ratio, the quality of your scratch work, or the amount of time you're spending on problems you should have given away.

Can I improve my GMAT® score in 2 weeks?

You can make small improvements in 2 weeks, especially if you fix a specific issue like timing management or scratch work organization. Large improvements typically require more time. If your test is in 2 weeks, focus on the highest-leverage changes: letting go of hard questions faster, cleaning up your scratch work, and doing a thorough review of your last practice test.
