If you see variables in the answer choices on a GMAT® quant problem, you have two paths.

You can do the algebra. Set up expressions, combine them, simplify, and match your result to one of the choices.

Or you can plug in numbers. Replace the variables with concrete values, compute an answer, then test each answer choice to find the one that matches.

Both methods work. Both can get you to the right answer. But most people tend to make fewer mistakes with plugging in numbers.

That's not because algebra is harder. It's because algebra has more places to go wrong. A sign error, a dropped term, a miscombined expression — any of those turn a correct setup into a wrong answer. With plugging in numbers, you're doing arithmetic with integers. The math is simpler. There are fewer places to make mistakes.

The Plug-In Numbers Method: Three Steps

Step 1: Choose numbers that fit the constraints

Read the problem. Find the variables. Pick easy numbers that satisfy whatever rules the problem gives you.

If the problem says x>yx > y, pick x=10x = 10 and y=5y = 5. If it says aa and bb are positive integers, pick a=2a = 2 and b=3b = 3.

Don't overthink the selection. The numbers don't need to be perfect. They need to be easy to work with and consistent with the problem's rules. If a choice turns out to make the math messy, pick different numbers.

A common mistake: spending too long searching for the "best" numbers. There's rarely a best choice. Any numbers that fit the constraints will work. Pick, compute, and move on.

Step 2: Solve the problem with those numbers

Replace every variable in the problem with your chosen numbers. Work through the problem as if it had no variables at all.

You'll get a concrete numerical answer. Write it down clearly, with units if the problem involves units.

This is the answer you're looking for in Step 3.

Step 3: Test each answer choice

Plug your chosen numbers into every answer choice. The one that produces the same numerical answer you got in Step 2 is correct.

Work through all five choices. Don't stop at the first match unless you're confident in your Step 2 answer. If two choices match, your numbers may have been too simple — pick new numbers and retest.

When to Plug In Numbers vs. Use Algebra

Plugging in numbers works whenever the answer choices contain variables. That's the trigger: variables in the answers.

If you're unsure which to use, plug in numbers. That's the default recommendation. It's not the "better" method in every situation. But it's the method that produces fewer wrong answers for most people on most problems with variables in answer choices.

The Built-In Error Check

Here's something algebra doesn't give you: a verification step.

When you do algebra, you set up expressions, simplify, and match. If you made an error along the way, you won't know until your answer doesn't match any choice — at which point you have to redo the entire problem.

When you plug in numbers, you compute a target answer in Step 2, then test each choice in Step 3. If your Step 2 answer was wrong, the testing step will fail to produce a match. That's a signal to check your Step 2 work before redoing everything.

The testing step also catches arithmetic errors. If you made a mistake testing one choice, the others will still be there. You can compare.

This built-in verification is why plugging in numbers is less error-prone. It's not that the method is simpler. It's that errors are more visible.

Common Mistakes When Plugging In Numbers

Choosing numbers that violate the constraints

If the problem says x>yx > y and you pick x=3x = 3, y=5y = 5, you'll get a wrong answer. Read the constraints before choosing.

Choosing numbers that are too simple

If you pick x=1x = 1 and y=0y = 0, some answer choices might produce the same result by coincidence. If two choices match, pick new numbers and retest. Use numbers that aren't 0 or 1 unless the problem requires it.

Forgetting to test all five choices

Some people find a match on choice (A) and stop. If their Step 2 answer was wrong, they just picked the wrong choice. Test all five. It takes about 30 extra seconds and catches errors.

Spending too long choosing numbers

This tends to be the biggest time waster. Pick numbers in 5 seconds. If they don't work well, pick again. The selection doesn't need to be optimal — it needs to be valid and easy to compute.

  1. On your next 5 problems with variables in answer choices, use the plug-in method. Follow all three steps exactly.

  2. After each problem, redo it using algebra. Compare the two experiences. Which felt faster? Which produced a cleaner solution?

  3. Track your errors. Were they algebra errors (sign mistakes, dropped terms) or arithmetic errors (computation with your chosen numbers)?

Should I always plug in numbers when there are variables in the answers?

For most people, yes. Plugging in numbers reduces errors because it replaces algebraic manipulation with arithmetic. If you're completely comfortable with algebra and rarely make errors, either method works. But if you occasionally make algebra mistakes — and most people do — plugging in is the safer choice.

How do I choose which numbers to plug in?

Pick numbers that satisfy the problem's constraints and are easy to compute with. If the problem says x>yx > y, try x=10x = 10 and y=5y = 5. Avoid 0 and 1 unless the problem requires them, because they can make multiple answer choices produce the same result. Don't spend more than a few seconds choosing. If your first pick makes the math messy, pick new numbers.

What if two answer choices match after I plug in numbers?

Pick a different set of numbers and redo Step 3. This happens occasionally when the numbers are too simple. It's not a problem — just retest with values that are less likely to produce coincidental matches.

Is plugging in numbers slower than doing algebra?

It can be. The tradeoff is speed vs. accuracy. Plugging in takes a few extra seconds because you're testing all five choices. But it catches errors that algebra doesn't. On test day, getting the right answer matters more than saving 20 seconds. If you're well-practiced with the method, the speed gap shrinks.

Can I use plugging in numbers on Data Sufficiency questions?

It's harder. Data Sufficiency asks whether you have enough information, not for a specific value. Plugging in can help you test cases, but the logic is different. For standard Problem Solving questions with variables in the answers, plugging in is straightforward. For Data Sufficiency, use it to generate test cases, not as a complete replacement for reasoning.
